皆さんは、共通テストの英語の問題どう思いましたか？
私の結論を先にいうと、「共通テストはとにかく色んな意味ですごい」です。
で、今回は、一部の問題を取り上げて、皆さんが「そういうことだったのか」と
なるように頑張って解説していきます。ちなみに前回の解説記事はこちら。
１. これからの英語教育に、多様な英語とICT導入は必須という話。
問題文冒頭はこのようになっています。
You've heard about a change in school policy at the school in the UK where you are now studying as an exchange student. You are reading the discussions about the policy in an online forum.
続けて、とある生徒が校長先生にネット掲示板に書き込みしています。
From: K. Roberts
Dear Dr Berger,
On behalf of all students, welcome to St Mark's School. We heard that you are the first Head Teacher with a business background, so we hope your experience will help our school.
I would like to express one concern about the change you are proposing to the after-school activity schedule. I realise that saving energy is important and from now it will be getting darker earlier. Is this why you have made the schedule an hour and a half shorter? Students at St Mark's School take both their studies and their after-school activities very seriously. A number of students have told me that they want to stay at school until 6.00 pm as they have always done. Therefore, I would like to ask you to think again about this sudden change in policy.
で、この内容を受けて、校長が次のように返信します。

Dear Ken,
Many thanks for your kind post. You've expressed some important concerns, especially about the energy costs and student opinions on school activities.
The new policy has nothing to do with saving energy. The decision was made based on a 2019 police report. The report showed that our city has become less safe due to a 5% increase in serious crimes. I would like to protect our students, so I would like them to return home before it gets dark.

さて、皆さんはこの文章どう思いました？
まずは、問題文からイギリスの学校が舞台、ということで、イギリス英語が入っています。
イギリス英語で校長はhead teacherで、アメリカ英語はprincipalです。
イギリス英語のrealiseはアメリカ英語ではrealizeです。
現行の検定教科書や問題集は基本的にアメリカ英語にそっていることがほとんど思われます。
さまざまな英語に触れていないと、少し戸惑うかもしれません。
また、掲示板の投稿を読ませるというのも、一般的な教育現場ではあまりないと思われます。
このような文章を読ませたい、書かせたいとなったら、
ネットが必要になってくると思われます。
しかし、まだ、学校現場ではネットの環境が不十分だと思います。
今後も、ネット環境整備が追いつかなければ、対策問題演習のような授業、少なくとも文科省が求めていないような授業が多く行われていってしまう気がします。
２. 作問者がこめた英語教育への願いは何かという話。
で、最初の設問です。
問１ Ken thinks the new policy ( )
(1) can make students study more
(2) may improve school safety
(3) should be introduced immediately
(4) will reduce after-school activity time
Kenはthe new policyについてどう考えているかを把握する問題です。
つまり、Kenという書き手の意見をきちんと把握しているか問う問題といえます。
普段の授業でも、何かについて意見する・考えさせる、ということが求められると思います。
授業でこの文章を扱うとしたら、次のような発問は使えると思います。
What does Ken think about the new policy?
Why does Ken think the new policy will reduce after-school activity time?
What do you think about the new policy?
次の設問ですが、factが大文字下線にもとからなっています。
問２ One fact stated in Ken's forum post is that ( )
(1) more discussion is needed about the policy
(2) the Head Teacher's experience is improving the school
(3) the school should think about students' activities
(4) there are students who do not welcome the new policy
情報を事実と意見に区別できるかを問う問題です。
情報を事実と意見に区別することは、ライティングをする上で基本的な能力と考えられています。
そういう意味で、普段の授業でも、何かについて書かせるとき、事実と意見を区別させながら文章を書く、ということが求められてると思います。
ちなみにこの問題答えは(4)ですが、「さすが！」と思うのは、答えの根拠となる問題文は次のようになっているからです。
A number of students have told me that they want to stay at school until 6.00 pm as they have always done.
ここでつられて選択肢をthere are many students who do not welcome the new policyとしないところがポイントです。
manyかどうかは主観的な要素なので、事実を選ばせる問題の答えとしては
微妙になってくるからです。「歓迎しない生徒がいる」なら事実だが、
「歓迎しない生徒がたくさんいる」は意見になりうるからです。
３. 英語のセンター試験と共通テストの違い
はっきりいって、だいぶ変わったなという印象ではないでしょうか。
これまで、センター試験の対策は共通テストに比べてよくわからないものもありました。
発音問題や、文法問題、語句整序問題です。
これは、スピーキングやライティングを問う問題がないので、それを間接的にでも
測ろうという意図は少しでもあるかと思います。
しかし、今回はリーディングだけです。
どうなるかと思いきや、めちゃ良くないか？というのが現場にたつ教師の感想です。
分析すればするほど、現場ではこういう授業をするばよいのではないか
というアイディアが沸くような問題と思います。
これまでは、学習指導要領の文章で、求められる学力やそれを育てる授業を
仮に考えてやってきましたが、ゴールが見えた感じです。
